The 2001 US Patriot Act gives government and
law enforcement unprecedented access into the private lives
of American citizens. Passed after the September 11
attacks, the USA Patriot Act gives law enforcement the right
to invade your privacy without probable cause. Under
this sweeping legislation, the government can:
-
Search your home and not even tell you.
-
Collect information about what books you
read, what you study, your purchases, your medical history
and your personal finances.
-
Label you a “terrorist” if
you belong to an activist group.
-
Monitor your e-mails and watch what internet
sites you visit.
-
Take away your property without a hearing.
-
Spy on innocent Americans.
-
Put immigrants in jail indefinitely.
-
Wiretap you under a warrant that doesn’t
even have your name on it.
The ACLU of Mississippi is working to
educate citizens about this law through seminars throughout
the state. We are also planning to help local governments
pass resolutions to oppose activities in the Patriot Act
that violate civil liberties and civil rights. If you
are interested in hosting one of these seminars or working
to pass an ordinance in your community, please write us at msacluoffice@msaclu.org.
